Haircuts and Illnesses

Life goes on...the countdown to baby #2 is now 9 weeks. Pretty crazy! We are doing what we can to get ready for the new addition, but I'm sure we will never be fully prepared. We were given my nephews twin bed and we will use that for Uriah when we have to put the new baby in the crib. That is still a ways away but we put the bed in his room for him to get used to. I'm hoping that the transition from crib to bed won't affect him too much. I still haven't bought any baby girl things yet. I have that lingering feeling in the back of my mind that is telling me that she could still come out being a boy. Luckily, my aunt offered to do a second ultrasound for me this weekend and then if she still tells me it's a girl then I will believe her. If we can't tell for certain by now then we never will!
Uriah is growing up so much. Last week when I picked him up from grandma's he had gotten a haircut, and I didn't even know about it! I was sad that his curly long hair in the back was gone, but he actually looks like a little boy now and hopefully people we pass in the store will stop calling him a girl.
Every time I see a new picture of him, I can't believe how great his eye looks. I never realized how bad it was when he was little because I was around him so much, but now that I have before and after pictures that I can look at, I can really see the difference. Modern medicine is a miracle, and I feel so blessed that we had a doctor concerned enough to recommend the surgery for us. In other updates, I got pretty sick last week. I pretty much got a bad cold, and being pregnant and sick at the same time is no fun, and I wasn't sure what I could take besides Tylenol so I was so stuffed up and achy that it was just a rough weekend. Luckily I didn't get a fever. Then Uriah got sick with a high fever and was a poor, grumpy baby for a while. We are both better now and back to ourselves. Uriah can now tell you what the lion says and what the snake says. It's so cute. Usually we ask him what the "beast" says because he knows that better than lion, but he does this cute little "rarr" and it is just so much fun!

Parking It

Last week my mom decided she wanted to get all the grandkids together and take them to the park. Uriah loves the park. He loves to swing the most. I think he could just sit in a swing and be pushed all day. If we took him out of the swing he would want back in it in less than 5 minutes.
I got tired of pushing him in the swing and decided to see how he would do on the slide. At first he wanted help up the stairs but after he went down the slide the first time he wanted to go up the stairs by himself every time. When he would get to the top, he didn't understand that he had to sit down in order to go down the slide. He always tried going down standing up, so we had to make sure we helped him sit on his bum before he went down.
I love taking Uriah to the park, but being 6 months pregnant and chasing around a 15 month-old toddler can really wear me out! I should take him more often so that my body can get used to some activity and in so doing hopefully not wear out as fast!

Pre and Post Op

Uriah had surgery on September 2 to lift his right eyelid up. It was hanging low enough to be blocking his vision and if we hadn't done something about it he could have lost vision in his right eye. We had to be at Salt Lake Regional at 6 in the morning. They didn't take Uriah back to have surgery until about 7:15 and we had to try and keep him happy until then. We couldn't let him eat anything before surgery so there were some moments where he just wasn't very happy, but all in all he was a good baby. He loved waving at the people who were working that morning and everyone just thought he was so cute. They pulled out a little red wagon for Uriah to ride around in. He liked that a lot.

Why aren't you feeding me???

Uriah loves to push anything and everything that will move, especially if it has wheels. He finally decided that it would be much more fun to push the wagon than to ride in it.

They gave Uriah infant tylenol mixed with a kind of sedative that would make him a little loopy so that he wouldn't cry when they took him back to surgery, away from mommy and daddy. Sitting in that waiting room was so hard, even though I knew things would be okay. The surgeon came out and told us that everything went better than they had expected and that Uriah's eyelid came up a lot better than most do. The nurses woke him up before we could get back there to him and when we walked back into recovery we could hear him crying. When we got to him he was screaming and crying. I couldn't bear it. Daddy had to hold him and rock him to sleep because I was crying so hard. It broke my heart to see that Uriah couldn't close his eye, that he was all swollen and that his tears were coming out red from the surgery. I know he was just scared and couldn't understand what was going on, but the fact that he hadn't eaten or gotten much sleep probably didn't make him feel better either. Finally we got the nurses to give him some motrin and daddy rocked him to sleep. When we got him back to where we were staying he was alert and awake for about an hour, but the rest of the day he was completely out of it.

This is the best his eye looked before the swelling started to really come in.

Uriah is sleeping in this picture. He can't close his eye all the way because the muscles they sewed together are still pretty tight. Eventually he will be able to teach himself how to shut his eye again, but for now we have to make sure it stays nice and moist and does't dry out.
This was Uriah sleeping on the ride back home. The poor little guy was just so exhausted and slept almost until we got home. As soon as we got him home he started acting like himself again. He didn't even act like his eye bothered him that much. I really think it has made a difference in how well he can see too. It has been a week since the surgery and Uriah looks great. The swelling has almost gone all the way down. He still looks a little black and blue but that is getting better every day. I am so thankful for the doctor who recommended the treatment and for the surgeons and for everyone at the hospital. They really knew what they were doing and they were so gentle and good to Uriah and to us. This surgery has been a good experience for all of us.

Getting Closer

Uriah's surgery is next week, and while it it supposed to be very routine and easy, it doesn't make it any easier for me to think about it. What really worries me is that they have to put him under for it, and the idea that something could happen to him keeps popping into my head. My mom always told me that I would never understand what it is like to worry until I have my own children, and until now I never believed her or understood what she meant. I worry so much about my one child, I don't know how she stayed sane with four kids. I know that Uriah's surgery is necessary and that if we don't get it taken care of then it could permanently damage his eye. His daddy and grandpa are going to give him a blessing this weekend and I should probably ask for a comfort blessing for myself, since I'll probably be a wreck the whole time Uriah is in surgery. :p
On a happier note, my sister-in-law is going through the temple this weekend in preparation for her wedding in a few weeks. I'm glad she has finally found the right guy. She did a lot of dating and needless to say some of the guys were definitely not worth it. But she is very happy now, so that's good. She is also having her bridal shower this weekend. It is crazy to think that when I married my husband she wasn't even barely old enough to start dating, and now here she is getting married! I have found it very interesting to watch my husband's family grow up. I was the youngest in my family and never got the chance to watch anyone but myself grow up, so watching his sisters has been a lot of fun.
Well, that's about all I've got to say for now. Here is a recent picture of Uriah.
